University of Ulster PhD student Fergus Jordan was the first to exhibit in weePLACE when it began in April 2009. Below he describes his work, an ongoing study of artificial light in public spaces.

Artificial light

“My photographic study explores the processes that begin once artificial light enters landscape. The intention is to measure the effectiveness, and to understand the complexity of the effects and meanings that may surface. I achieve this by way of close photographic examination and from experience gained by observing a range of lighting situations in any landscape.”

Constructed environments and re-representations of space

“To visualize is to construct a vision of the world. We build information through images and these constructions can inform us about the world we inhabit – they help us define our sense of place and make us aware of the world we live in. The visual records of the photographic studies of artificial light in public spaces that I carry out are intuitive and speculative rather than that of measurement or fact. My photographs become landscapes in their own right; they are fictions of public space that in turn can influence how I perceive space around me. The photograph allows me to re-represent space and project the space in my own context; effectively creating a landscape that reflects how a space makes me feel, think or act. These photographs are my visions of space rather than authentic visions of the world.”
